UML appeals to help implement constitution

Kathmandu, Sept 17: The CPN-UML has appealed to all to contribute from their respective side in implementing the new constitution by holding the slated elections on time.

At a press meet organized here Saturday to share about the party’s activities to be organized to mark the first constitution day, the party shared that it was determined to protect and implement the constitution of Nepal drafted on the foundation of the Nepali people’s sacrifice.

“It was because of our party’s determined resolve against the elements not allowing the constitution to be drafted in the first place, then stopping the constitution from being promulgated and obstructing its implementation that the country got a democratic constitution”, reads a statement distributed on the occasion.

Stating that the basic principle of social justice, equal access of all people to state, progressive transformation of the state have been adopted, the press release stated that the party has been feeling proud towards the leadership role it played to promulgate the new constitution.

The country is observing the first anniversary of the promulgation of the new constitution on September 19.

Saying conspiracies have been hatched not to let implementing the new constitution, which was promulgated in the presence of more than 90 per cent people’s representatives, the CPN (UML) said, “It will be natural to make necessary amendment in the constitution on the basis of complexities surfaced after its implementation.

The press release states, “It is impossible to imagine the new constitution neglecting any communities, sectors and among others due to the structure of the Constituent Assembly, practice of inclusion adopted and the need of hour.”

Saying that those who were against the constitution in the first place were now voicing to amend the constitution, the statement has identified the constitution as only a means to institutionalise republic, federalism, secularism and inclusion achieved through 2006 people’s movements.

The door to economic prosperity, social justice and justifiable development as envisioned by the constitution would open only after three sets of elections are held, the statement believed, acknowledging the implementation of the constitution as the need of the hour.

“We (UML) as representative of the people have got this constitution and we also take its ownership. So we stand firmly to safeguard and implement it,” it added.

On the occasion, party’s General Secretary Ishwar Pokharel said the UML did not wish to differ with others while observing the constitution day as a national festival.

On a different note, Pokharel said Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, said to have received the support of India to become the PM, too failed to win India’s support to the constitution.

The CPN-UML is organizing a grand mass meeting at Basantpur on September 19 to mark the first anniversary of the promulgation of the Constitution of Nepal, according to information shared at the press meet. RSS
