Congress Mahasamti meeting begins today

Kathmandu, Dec 15 (RSS): The Mahasamiti meeting of the main opposition, Nepali Congress party begins today. The meeting has been called to amend the party’s statute as per the new federal structure adopted by the country.

The names of the Mahasamiti members have already been registered at the central office for the same on Friday. The inaugural session of the meeting is taking place at the Yagamber Party Palace at Singha Durba this morning, according to party spokesperson Biswa Prakash Sharma.

The meeting will run until December 18. Some 1,600 delegates including Mahasamiti members elected from the erstwhile 240 constituencies, party central committee members, representatives of party sister organizations and observers are taking part in the meeting.

The closed session to follow the inaugural session will see presentation and deliberations on the political report by Vice-chair Bimalendra Nidhi, organizational by general secretary Dr Shashank Koirala, statute amendment by general secretary Purna Bahadur Khadka, overall economic policy by joint-general secretary Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat and internal financial report by Treasurer Sita Devi Yadav. The reports were already endorsed by the central committee meeting, except for the statute draft.

Differences continue to remain on the statute draft and are expected to be addressed and resolved by the mahasamiti, spokesperson Sharma said.
