Large taxpayers under scanner

Biratnagar, June 4: The Biratnagar Sub Metropolis has taken steps for legal action against more than a dozen large taxpayers for tax evasion spanning almost a decade.

The large taxpayers were included in the black list for not coughing up due taxes related to their residences, land properties and businesses.

The District Land Revenue Office has issued notifications for sanctions on the land and residential properties for those not paying taxes for a decade.

The number of big industrial groups and enterprises are highest among the non-taxpayers.

Among the industrialists with dismal tax performances include Kisanlal Dugad of the Dugad Residence located at Biratnagar – 8 with a tax debt of Rs 1.5 million of nine years. Similarly, Bikash Dugad has not paid Rs 800,000 while Krishna Gopal Shrestha, proprietor of Namaskar Hotel, Biratnagar has due tax amount of Rs 1 million. Diwakar Golcha of the Golcha Group also has not paid due tax amounting to Rs 1 million of the last five years.

The amount of tax to be collected from small and big including hundreds of other kinds of taxpayers has shot past Rs 20 million.

Sub Metropolis’ Finance Management Chief, Arjun Thapaliya, said the municipality office has not been able to meet its set goal of revenue generation due to noncompliance by taxpayers. He said legal actions were being initiated against large taxpayers.

The Sub Metropolis had aimed at collecting around Rs 220 million in the running fiscal year but it only succeeded in drawing Rs 140 million as of Thursday. The five month long Tarai-Madhes uprising has also impacted the revenue collection, according to the Sub Metropolis. RSS
