Kathmandu, July 20: House Speaker, Onsari Gharti, today met with senior orthopedic surgeon, Dr Govinda KC, who is staging a fast-unto-death at the TU Teaching Hospital (TUTH) with a host of demands for reformation in the medical education sector of the country.
She inquired into the deteriorating health condition of Dr KC. The Speaker met with Dr KC after receiving information of his weakening health, and urged the doctor to take care of his health condition while giving assurance of efforts to get his demands heard. The doctor has been on strike for the last 11 days.
During the meeting, Dr KC raised a question, “Where is your home?” and “Where do the people from there go to receive treatment?” He said that the Nepali people would receive quality health service only if there is a reformation in the medical sector.
“I have repeatedly appealed to the government to open a medical college in Dang so that the people there could receive quality health service, but there were no budget allocated for it,” Dr KC said adding, “No one wants to go outside of the valley.”
The doctor made it clear that he was forced to stage hunger strike as the medical education was being developed into a profitable institute by shunning the sentiment of service.
Speaker Gharti assured Dr KC of holding talks with the parties on his demands.
As the Speaker arrived at the TUTH premises, the resident doctors pursuing higher medical studies had chanted slogan demanding fulfillment of the agitating doctor’s demands. RSS
