Chitwan, April 15: Nepali Congress central member Dr Shekhar Koirala today reiterated that the Congress party would fulfil the role of a ‘responsible opposition’.

At a greetings exchange, felicitation and tea reception held by Congress constituency 4 in Chitwan, Koirala warned the party against joining the government in haste.

Joining the government when the Madhes’ issues continue to linger will have a long term impact for Congress, Koirala said. He further called on Congress to lead the effort to resolve the problems seen in Tarai.

He accused the government of failing to distribute relief to the earthquake survivors, stopping rampant black market trading and spoke of politicization engulfing constitutional bodies while adding that these boiling issues would make life difficult for the government.

Leader Koirala blamed the inability on part of the top three parties in the government to work in a hassle free environment to ‘incompetent leadership’.

On the occasion, former lawmaker and social worker Maiya Devi Shrestha was honoured in recognition of her contribution, Congress Regional President, Sarita KC said.

‘NC to foster understanding between govt and Madhesi Front’

Meanwhile, speaking to journalists in Biratnagar, Nepali Congress central committee member Dr Minendra Rijal said that priority at present is to seek an outlet from the problem by bringing the agitating Madhesi Front and the government to a meeting point.

Also the former Minister for Information and Communications, Rijal opined that the constitution’s implementation would be difficult without addressing the Madhesi Front’s movement. “The Nepali Congress will take the initiation for forging consensus by finding a meeting point,” he added.

Calling on the government to be serious regarding the movement launched by the Madhesi Front, he urged the Madhesi Front to give up its obstinacy and sit for talks with the government. RSS
