Janakpurdham, Oct 28: Nepali Congress general secretary Dr Shashank Koirala has said the constitution amendment is the need of the hour as the people aspire for the same.
Speaking at a press meet organised by Nepal Press Union in Janakpur today, the NC general secretary said though Nepal’s constitution falls into the category of one of the best constitutions in the world, it needs revisions to gain wider acceptability. He was of the view of initiating the constitution amendment process as soon as possible.
He said the country was heading towards the constitution amendment process, calling on all sides concerned to be serious towards this reality.
Leader Koirala expressed his hope that CPN (UML) would also support the amendment.
He further urged the Madhesi parties unhappy with some provisions of the new constitution to reconsider their demand for two provinces in the Terai and try to find a point for a consensus.
In his response to journalists’ query, he said the impeachment motion against CIAA Chief Lokman Singh Karki has somehow affected the national agenda, the decision of impeaching him was not a conspiracy to relegate such agenda to a back burner.
He further stressed the need of clearing the structure of provinces before the local poll, highlighting the need of broad discussions on a number of local units presented by the Local Body Restructuring Commission. RSS
